OLD GAME OF CHESS CAPTURES YOUTH

At the Emporium last Sunday, a group of local youth gathered around several tables in the back to play the age-old game of chess. At one table, Eliana Ling slid her white pawn out to start the match, and Amelie Maruyama moved a black pawn to mirror her adversary across the checkered grid. Soon two black bishops and a white knight were captured, and the queens were staring each other down from either end of their kingdoms. GREENE COUNTY — On a recent humid afternoon, several rambunctious elementary school students were unleashing their boundless energy within the confines of the Emporium coffee shop in Yellow Springs. But instead of their steam being blown on a mindless game of tag or a video game, they were spending brain wattage learning the game of chess.
